Direct DV Mode

With Casablanca Avio, Prestige, Kron and Solitaire, recording using the "Direct DV" feature, the data is no longer re-compressed - as opposed to M-JPEG or MPEG-2.

Video in digital form requires very high data capacities. Uncompressed digital video would need some 27 MB/Second, making a 9GB hard disk full in app.5,7 minutes (if the drive was fast enough - which it isn't).
To reduce the data to a reasonable size, video has to be compressed.

The video world is currently using the following compression methods:

  • DV (used by DV camcorders)
  • M-JPEG (similar to the DV method, for e.g. used by Casablanca I)
  • Wavelet (seldom used)
  • MPEG-2 (used by Casablanca Avio and Kron)

DV, MJPEG, Wavelet are similar in terms of storage capacity (app. 40 minutes using a 9Gb hard-drive). MPEG-2 however, is some 3-4 times more effective (more than 120 minutes using 9GB).

Casablanca Avio, Prestige, Kron's and Solitaire's "Direct DV" method means that the data is no longer MPEG-2 compressed but is taken "as is". As each conversion represents a minimal loss of quality this means that theoretically the "Direct DV" method is the best.

Most of the times, the viewer can hardly make out a difference - with Casablanca Avio, Prestige, Kron and Solitaire, we'll leave that choice up to the user himself.
